Would you regard marriage as an achievement and the failure to get married as a failure?

Twitter user, Caroline may be feeling regretful over a post she shared on her Twitter account this past weekend. In a post that she may have shared as a bit of tongue and cheek and hopefully looking into making people laugh it seems the opposite has transpired.

Caroline shared a picture of a woman dressed in a traditional blanket and doek seated on a mat with the caption ' You can buy every outfit you like but this one, you earn it'. In many African cultures the picture symbolizes the official end of lobola negotiations which mean that in the traditional sense the woman is now formally married. Many twitter users took offense to this suggestion by Caroline that a woman had to earn marriage.

Stacey wanted to sound off on the post immediately after she saw it.
Marriage is a beautiful and amazing journey but ladies, we need to stop seeing it as a goal or accomplishment, because it’s neither of those things. You don’t really need any talents or qualifications to get married. You don’t need a marriage to feel special or realize your worth.- Stacey Norman
Society already puts so many unrealistic standards on women that marriage should not be another added on the list according to Stacey, also the thought that a man indirectly has the power of determining whether you are worthy of marriage is deeply problematic.
See what some Twitter users had to say in response to Caroline's post:
Like men don't bend over backwards paying lobola to satisfy their masculine burden as providers which is a lifetime commitment btw.... what exactly do you mean "bend over backwards"? cause i took it's literal sense which is actually what women mean by "proving their worth" pic.twitter.com/B422EuZzYb

You, as you are, are everything, whole and worthy. You don’t have to earn marriage.
A last word from Stacey?
A woman can have a successful career and a really awesome life, but at dinner parties or weddings people will still ask her, “So, why aren’t you married yet?” This needs to stop. People are placing too much focus on marriage as being the ultimate achievement but it shouldn’t shadow other goals and successes in life.- Stacey
What are your thoughts KZN?
Do you consider being married an acheivement and do you think a woman has to earn the right to get married, if so what would the criteria be?
Caroline was contacted by Stacey and JSbu and declined to give comment on her post on Twitter.
