A tourist who visited Italy shared an unfortunate expense on a simple cheese toastie. They paid a whooping R40 (2 euros) for it to be cut!
The summer of 2023 is tarnishing Italy's idyllic charm as a wave of ridiculous rip-offs targeted at both foreign tourists and locals have taken place in multiple cafes and restaurants, outraging tourists.- International, The News
This notable price surge has been attributed to a 130% price hike as locals wish to capitalise on tourists.
Many users have remarked online that they have experienced similar situations. From paying R1,200 for coffees to paying R40 for an extra empty plate, it is wild out there.

Check out some videos where holiday-makers have been scammed in Italy:
@la_wandereuse Avoid these scams while traveling to Italy! Be aware of who’s around you at all times so you can keep your belongings safe and avoid any unwanted encounters. If approached by a street vendor, remember you don’t have to be rude just firm when saying no (and don’t stop to chat lol just keep walking). Also sunglasses aren’t just to keep the sun out of your eyes, they’re great for avoiding eye contact 😜 #travel101 #rometraveltips #italytraveltips #traveltips #touristscams #travelsmart #femaletravelblogger ♬ Bbyze (original slow jam) - unknown

@stopitaliansounding READ HERE FOR MORE ⬇️ How much is the most expensive Italian cheese? Well, the name is Bitto Storico, and it is made from only 12 producers in the Northern Italian Orobic Alps. Only milk from free roaming and local cows and goats are used for this cheese. The livestock eat only pasture grass. The regulations prohibit the use of feeds and silage. In the Orobic Alps the plentiful fresh water, sunshine and differences in altitude contribute to the presence of a rich floral variety, which in turn gives the milk its superior nutritional quality. This cheese can be left to age for over 10 years, and is produced in very small quantities every year. Bitto Storico is considered the most expensive Italian cheese with a price tag of about $150 per pound (about $300 per kg). #italian #cheese #bitto #cheesetiktok #italy ♬ Stolen Dance (Instrumental) - Milky Chance
