Tatjana Smith earned this much by winning Gold at the Olympics
Updated | By Stacey & J Sbu
Sho! These totals will make you wonder why contending in the Olympics is no joke...
Our Golden Girl, Tatjana Smith, is the apple of our eyes as we celebrate her win in the 100-metre breaststroke final.
Her win isn't just her own, but pride and joy for South Africans. In saying that, all the blood, sweat, and tears in getting Tatjana Smith to the Olympics doesn't come with a small price tag. Smith and her fellow athletes stand to win big when they earn an Olympic medal.
It doesn't just come with the glory of flashing the bling but with well-deserved earnings from The South African Sports Confederation and Olympic Committee (SASCOC).
We can all agree that participating in the Olympics has no equivalent price because it is an honour for most athletes, but it does come with some perks.
"According to the South African Sports Confederation and Olympic Committee (Sascoc), South Africa has sent 138 athletes (excluding reserves) across 19 codes to compete for podium finishes at the Paris 2024 games." (Business Tech)
SASCOC has medal incentives with the highest payout being R400,000. Check out the monetary incentives for individuals, relay and team sports, and boats (two athletes).
What's even more exciting to hear is that World Athletics announced that it would be the first international federation to reward athletes at the Olympic Games financially.
If an athlete achieves the "pinnacle of sports success", aka a gold medal, they could win big. "A total prize pot of $2.4-million (R43.88 million) has been ring-fenced to reward athletes who win a gold medal in each of the 48 athletics events in Paris at $50,000 (R914,553) per gold medal. If a South African wins gold at one of the individual athletics events, they could take home a whopping R1.3 million rand." (Business Tech)
Although South Africa promises a good enough total for athletes who win medals at the Olympics, Hong Kong leads the list of countries with its incentives: "HK$6 million (R14.07 million) for gold, HK$3 million (R7.04 million) for silver, and HK$1.5 million (R3.5 million) for bronze."
