Swipe right with caution: AI joins dating apps

Several dating apps have been infiltrated by AI-generated profiles – so convincing that many people searching for love can’t tell they’re not real.

Online dating can be a wild ride, especially for Gen Z and millennials. With AI-generated profiles on the rise, it's getting harder to spot a fake from the real deal.

A recent study by Pour Moi found that 62% of people can't tell the difference between a real person and a bot on dating apps.

It's like trying to find a needle in a haystack, but the haystack is on fire, and the needle is a catfish.

The study revealed that 57% of participants thought they could spot a fake profile, but when put to the test, 62% failed to identify the AI-generated accounts, reports TimesLIVE.

The younger generation (18–24) was the most confident in their AI-spotting abilities, but still, 55% didn't select the AI images when confronted with them.

How can you avoid getting duped? Marketing manager at Pour Moi, Marina Nicoli, has some solid advice:

  • Look out for inconsistencies in photos and text.

  • Run reverse image searches.

  • Trust your instincts if something feels off.

  • Ask to add them on social media to get a better sense of who they are.

  • Zoom in on images to spot telltale signs of AI-generated profiles (think freckles, bright eyes, and soft edges).

Online dating can be a minefield, but with caution and a critical eye, you can increase your chances of finding a real connection.
