J Sbu on the fence about a study that says sisters boost one's mental health
Updated | By Stacey & J Sbu
This is after we heard about a study that revealed that having sisters boosts a child's mental health and self-esteem.
Researchers surely do give us interesting things to think about.
This time it has to do with siblings. The relationship between siblings is anything but a walk in the park for many and sometimes it is just destined to be challenging.
It is for this very reason we are so surprised by a study that was published in The Journal of Family Psychology.
The study showed that having a sister can boost mental health as well as self-esteem.
"The study further explains the changes that they noticed in the life of the participants due to the presence of sisters. These changes gave the individuals better tools to deal with their future, making them more prepared and wholesome in the process." (MSN)
Of course, this is not a stock standard approach that can be applied to all sisters, but it certainly was interesting to note.

The study, which was conducted in 2010, used 395 families.
Alexander Jensen, the author of the research and an assistant professor in the School of Family Life, shared this about sisters: "They help you develop social skills, like communication, compromise, and negotiation. Even sibling conflict, if it is minor, can promote healthy development." (MSN)
We asked J Sbu if he concurs with this line of thinking. J Sbu has a younger sister and was quite adamant that he did not feel this way.
I have a sister and, uh, okay, maybe it's different. It depends on the type of relationship you have with your sister. I'm assuming with anyone if you have this type of relationship with someone they try their best not to make you feel lonely, they love you, they take care of you, they worry about you, I would assume that that would boost your self-esteem. But I'm not sure if it's having a sister that does that. I have a younger sister, she's nice, but I wouldn't say it's boosted my self-esteem.- J Sbu

In his opinion, this is obviously not applicable to all sisters because some people feel the complete opposite.
It was noted that sisters help their siblings feel protected, less lonely, and loved.
"The study, as per BYU News, concluded that having a good relationship with sisters provided individuals with emotional and psychological advantages." (MSN)
