Driving in adverse weather conditions is a recipe for disaster. While most of us can’t pause our lives due to the weather, it's important you know how to stay safe while travelling.

KwaZulu-Natal is experiencing heavy downpours that began last night, resulting in significant damage and loss of life across the province.

To help you reach your destination safely and on time, here are some essential tips from Arrive Alive:

  • Always maintain a safe following distance
Increase the three-second following rule to at least five to six seconds to keep a decent distance between you and the vehicle in front of you.

  • Do not accelerate on wet roads
Wet asphalt is bound to cause aquaplaning. To keep control of your vehicle, take your foot off the accelerator

  • Do not slam on brakes
Avoid slamming your brakes as this can cause your vehicle to skid.

  • Change to lower gear on bends
If you're driving a manual vehicle and are approaching a sharp bend, change to a lower gear and keep both your hands on the steering. wheel.

  • Switch your headlights on
Regardless of the lighting, if it is raining, make sure your headlights are switched on to increase your visibility.
