One of South Africa's leading retailers is set to revolutionise the grocery shopping experience with the launch of its new high-end store concept, Spar Gourmet.

These stores promise will target affluent shoppers, providing a unique and luxurious shopping experience, complete with premium products and bespoke offerings.

According to Max Oliva, CEO of Spar Southern Africa, stores will feature Spar’s Signature Selection range alongside exclusive partnerships with strategic suppliers.

Key focus areas include premium food solutions, coffee, bakery and indulgent products, with a curated assortment tailored to meet the needs of a more affluent customer base.

The strategy includes converting high-end niche Spar stores, while also opening new locations in strategic sites. Spar anticipates around 30 to 40 Gourmet stores in the future, although there’s no fixed timeline.

So, what can shoppers expect from Spar Gourmet?

For starters, the stores will feature a standardised design and brand philosophy, creating a high-margin retail model that promises to deliver exceptional quality and value.

From premium meat products and artisanal cheeses to high-end canned fish and exclusive wines, Spar Gourmet will aim to deliver a shopping experience that's unparalleled in the South African retail landscape.

Spar is confident that its new high-end store concept will become the go-to destination for discerning shoppers.

"To strengthen our position in the competitive soft discount grocery sector, we will also be introducing revamped SaveMor store formats and enhance branding and product assortment to give greater prominence to SaveMor in 2025,” notes Oliva.
