South Africans can now track tax refunds and audits via WhatsApp

SARS has just stepped up its game with a brand-new WhatsApp channel designed to make tax season a whole lot smoother. Now, instead of waiting on hold or navigating through websites, you can simply ping SARS on WhatsApp for quick updates on your tax refunds and more.

Tax season is here and while many people are scrambling to get their affairs in order, this latest feature will take away any stress involved in the process. 

Here's how the new service works:

  1. Save the SARS WhatsApp number 0800 11 7277 on your contact list or access it on your desktop here.
  2. Initiate a conversation by sending "Hi" or "Hello".
  3. Select “Accept” to opt into the service.
  4. Select which service you would like to access from the list of options:
  • Request your Tax Reference Number;
  • Request your Statement of Account;
  • Request your Return Refund Status;
  • Request your Audit Status and
  • Request your Notice of Assessment.

According to BusinessTech, the SARS WhatsApp channel is part of the service's promise to lean into newer technologies to make tax compliance easier for taxpayers.

Without the guidance of a specialised tax practitioner or a clear understanding of the process, navigating tax matters can feel nearly impossible.

The South African Revenue Service has launched this new WhatsApp channel dedicated to personal income tax queries, accessible on both mobile and desktop versions of WhatsApp.
