South African craft beer named the best in Africa
Updated | By East Coast Radio
Cheers to this! A South African brewery claims title of best beer on the continent!
For many alcohol-lovers, there’s nothing like cracking open a crisp beer. One of our very own local brands, Soul Barrel Brewery, has clinched the top spot on the continent for their winning creation, Ale of Origin.
This microbrewery located between Stellenbosch and Paarl in the Cape Winelands has achieved this remarkable accomplishment for the second time. Their first victory was in 2022.
EXPLORE: Things To Do In KZN
Legend has it that the secret ingredient wasn't some mystical potion, simply barrel-aged beers and use of indigenous South African ingredients. With a dash of ingenuity and creative genius, this brew crew crafted a beer that was truly something special for the 2024 African Beer Cup.
This winning beer embodies the brewery’s commitment to using locally sourced ingredients. It is the only beer in South Africa brewed according to traditional Lambic methods. No yeast is pitched, instead wild yeast from the air is blown in from the wind into the beer as it cools, then it ferments and ages in oak barrels for four years!
In an epic showdown, this beer bravely faced off against 270 competitors hailing from 16 different African nations. A panel of seasoned judges from across the globe gathered to put these brews to the test, sipping and scrutinising over three days.

As shared by the brewery, "we are called Soul Barrel as we believe in brewing with soul and purpose, our mission is to make South Africa one of the best brewing countries in the world. The brewery is located outside of Franschhoek in a giant old wine cellar built in 1906."
We are so fortunate to be able to say that Mzansi does it best even when it comes to beer. To check out and possibly taste this unique brew, check out https://soulbarrel.co.za/.
