A new record has been set, but does this car live up to all the hype?
This just in, a 1955 Mercedes-Benz 300 SLR Uhlenhaut Coupe has just been sold at an invite-only auction for a whooping R2.3-billion.
This car is reported by Business Insider to be a prototype race car built for the 1956 season.
According to RM Sotheby's, it's also one of the rarest, most valuable items ever sold at auction.

Although this car is small, it offers a unique intrinsic value hence why someone paid $143-million (R2.3-billion) for it.
The record prior to this was an underwhelming amount of R1.5-billion.
This invite-only auction happened at a prestigious gathering on May 5 at its museum in Stuttgart, Germany - the automobile capital of the world.

Further analysis of this car tells us that the coupe was never raced.
Rudolf Uhlenhaut, the head of Mercedes's testing department at the time, used it as a company car.
This car was finally let go for "a good cause".
Mercedes says "it will use the proceeds from the sale to set up a scholarship fund to support education and research into environmental science and decarbonisation."
