SEE: Is Karkloof home to the biggest puff adder ever?!
Updated | By East Coast Radio
If you know KZN, then you'll also know that coming across a snake is quite a regular occurrence, but this one is pretty exceptional.
In this lovely province, you are likely going to eventually cross paths with a slithering reptile (or maybe you already have).

KZN residents are no strangers to snakes and they have almost become a consistent part of our daily routines.
And for good reason.
Although many types of snakes are common in this area of SA, it is also important to remain vigilant around them and remember that they are still dangerous animals.

That being said, people on various South African snake groups were left in awe of an incredible specimen when they came across the picture of a very specific puff adder.
A user uploaded a picture of a snake to the Snakes Of Southern Africa Facebook group asking for assistance in identifying the creature in question.

He also provided a location, Karkloof, Howick, KZN, which would hopefully increase the chances of accurate identification.

Members of the group instantly began to respond with many agreeing that it is definitely a puff adder.
But what caught their attention was not the type of snake or the proximity of the snake to the photographer, instead, everyone seemed shocked at the size of the animal!

Some users also asked a very important question: is the snake actually that abnormally large or could it just be the angle of the photograph?
Pieter Potgieter, a snake catcher from Pietermaritzburg, spoke to The Witness and was able to clear a few things up.
We call this false perspective, the angle where the picture was taken makes it look bigger or longer. We hardly get puff adders in South Africa that exceed 1.3 metres, I think the longest puff adder ever caught in South Africa on record is 1.4 metres. It is a decent sized puff adder, but it is most definitely not a two or three metre animal.- Pieter Potgieter

While some might be disappointed by the news that this is not a record-breaking snake, we are rather quite relieved.
Now we just need to keep an eye out for the regular, run-of-the-mill puff adders!
