SEE: Black mamba surprises Mariannhill man taking a bathroom break
Updated | By Stacey and J Sbu
This is not the kind of surprise most people would want to find in their own home.
If you are not a fan of snakes then this might not be the story for you but there is some important info here.
We all know that KZN is famous for its wildlife especially its slippery, slithery friends.
Durban's number one snake rescuer, Nick Evans recently had another wild snake excursion when he was called out to Mariannhill.
A man was making his way to the loo when he heard some movement in a basket next to the toilet. Luckily the man was hesitant and got the fright of his life when a black mamba popped its head out.
Obviously, the man was ready to protect his family and jumped into action.
He wasn't sure which type of snake it was and proceeded to stuff a towel on top of the basket, covering the snake.
It managed to get out, and because they thought it wasn't venomous, he was going to grab it by the tail. But he changed his mind and it then went behind the toilet.- Nick Evans
Choosing to rather be safe and not sorry the family waited for Nick and his wife, Joelle to arrive as they kept watch over the mamba.
The man then went even further and seeing as the bathroom door couldn't close properly he sprayed the snake with insect spray to keep it in the bathroom.
Not the nicest thing, I know, but I understand his actions. I'm sure panic had kicked in. It was a big, intimidating snake after all. They actually had no intention of the snake being killed.- Nick Evans
The snake was having none of it though and it moved from the bathroom to the kitchen and so the family also moved outside.
I scanned the floor, then looked up ... What an interesting sight! It was cruising on the kitchen counter, going behind some pots. When the mamba went around the pots, I grabbed the tail, which was still sticking out. My word, did I regret that. I learnt that a mamba, which has been sprayed with bug spray, is one mental creature. Luckily, my tongs were out quickly, and I grabbed it mid-air, while it rushed at me, and pinned it down on the floor. Only the second time that's happened to me with a mamba. That gave me a big, big fright.- Nick Evans
In the end, Nick, his wife, the family and the snake were all fine!
The snake was cleaned off and it will be released into the wild again.
