SA's most hijacked vehicles: Is your car on the list?
Updated | By Stacey and J Sbu
Is your car a hijacker's dream? We’ve got the updated list of SA’s most hijacked vehicles.

Vehicle hijackings remain a significant concern in South Africa, with certain models being targeted more frequently than others.
According to security experts, popular vehicles like Toyota, Volkswagen and Ford are consistently among the most hijacked cars.
The Fidelity Services Group has reported a notable decrease in hijackings by 27.3% between November and December 2024.
However, this decline is expected to be short-lived, with hijackings
predicted to "rise again from late January, with a big jump in February
and March 2025" reports BusinessTech.
Which vehicles are most at risk?
The top hijacked vehicles in South Africa include:
VW Polo
Toyota HiluxFord Ranger
Toyota Corolla Cross
Toyota Fortuner
Haval Jolion
Chery Tiggo 4 Pro
Haval H6
Chery Tiggo 7 Pro
These vehicles are targeted due to their high demand for parts or resale value, often through illicit markets. Even newer car models, like the Toyota Corolla Cross, can quickly become targets for criminals.
Chinese car brands, such as Chery and Haval, are also becoming increasingly popular among hijackers. As their popularity grows, so does their appeal to criminals.
To stay safe, owners of high-target vehicles should take extra precautions, such as installing advanced tracking devices or avoiding high-risk areas during certain times.
Wahl Bartmann, CEO of Fidelity Group, advises that staying alert is crucial.
"Too often, we are distracted, which makes us vulnerable to criminal activity. The best response is to be alert and aware of any suspicious activity near you," says Bartmann.
Ultimately, vigilance is essential for everyone, regardless of the make or model of their car. By being aware of the risks and taking necessary precautions, drivers can reduce their chances of becoming a hijacking statistic.
