SA's best-selling cars: Top 15 brands that grabbed the hearts (and wallets) of locals

Looking to purchase a vehicle or just curious about the automotive industry? We’ve got the top 15 most popular brands that sold the most cars in SA recently.

After eight consecutive months of decline, there’s been a growth in the new vehicle market, according to The Automotive Business Council/Naamsa.
In April this year, there was an improvement of 2.2%, which means 38,172 cars were sold. Of these, 89.9% were sold through dealerships, 5% in the rental industry, 2.7% went to the government, and 2.4% were sold to corporate fleets.

“The positive performance in the new vehicle market during April 2024 was a welcomed development along with a full month of no load-shedding, which likely supported business conditions,” Naamsa said.
They shared the top 15 brands that sold the most cars in SA for the month of April. Here are the brands and number of units sold:
- Toyota – 8,541
- Suzuki – 4,891
- Volkswagen Group – 4,758
- Ford – 2,614
- Hyundai – 2,134
- Chery – 2,009
- Isuzu – 1,540
- GWM – 1,493
- Nissan – 1,443
- Renault – 1,307
- BMW – 1,231
- KIA – 1,003
- Mahindra – 893
- Mercedes-Benz SA – 562
- Stellantis – 437
