SA Uber riders: Limits on passengers and bags

Travelling with the crew or got bags? Uber in SA has reminded drivers and riders about passenger limits for Go, X and Black.

Heads up, Uber users in South Africa. The popular ride-hailing service has reminded drivers and riders about guidelines that could affect how you book your next trip, especially if you're rolling with a crowd or have luggage in tow.

Uber announced these changes to ensure smoother rides, focusing on everyone's comfort, having enough space, and overall safety.

The good news for those with bags is that luggage is still allowed with all Uber options, from the budget-friendly Uber Go to the spacious Uber Van.

However, when it comes to how many people can hop in, things are a little different now, reports BusinessTech.

If you're opting for Uber Go, it's now a maximum of two passengers.

For the more common Uber X, as well as Uber Comfort and Uber Black, the limit is now three people.

If you're travelling with more people, you'll need to look at Uber XL, which can handle up to six passengers or possibly even the mighty Uber Van, which can accommodate seven.

Uber did throw in a little disclaimer, mentioning that these are more like helpful suggestions. The company even advised that if you're unsure if your luggage or group will fit comfortably, it's best to give your driver a quick heads-up, as different vehicles might have varying space.

This announcement comes hot on the heels of Uber introducing Uber Moto, a new way to zip around the Western Suburbs of Johannesburg's CBD on the back of a motorbike.

Keep in mind, though, that Uber Moto is a solo ride (just one passenger) and no luggage is allowed. If you need to send a package, Uber suggests using their courier service instead.

“There have been no changes to Uber’s passenger limits. Our products are designed to offer seamless mobility experiences based on diverse rider needs. The smaller, compact vehicles are often used for everyday travel, where riders may be carrying work bags, school backpacks, groceries, or shopping and are therefore better suited to fewer passengers," Uber said.
