SA cannabis industry relieved as ban lifted
Updated | By Stacey and J Sbu
The ban on cannabis and hemp foodstuffs has been lifted, but what does this really mean for the industry and its stakeholders?

In a significant move, the South African government has repealed the regulations prohibiting the sale, importation and manufacture of hemp and cannabis-containing products.
This decision has been hailed as a major victory for the local cannabis industry, which has been facing an uncertain future since the ban was imposed, reports IOL.
According to Shaad Vayej, attorney and chairperson of Openfarms, the withdrawal of the ban signals the government's commitment to transparent and evidence-based regulation.
However, Vayej notes that this does not mean a free-for-all in the market, as the regulation of these products still falls under existing guidelines and laws.
The ban's repeal has been welcomed by industry stakeholders, who argue that it will pave the way for a regulated and thriving cannabis industry in South Africa.
Tony Budden, co-founder of Hemporium SA, notes that the lack of clear regulations and communication from the government has had serious repercussions on investor confidence in the industry.
As the industry moves forward, it is clear that there are still many
challenges to be addressed.
The Department of Health's concerns about
product safety and labelling remain genuine, and the industry will need
to work closely with government agencies to create policies and
regulations that support industry growth.
Despite these challenges, the lifting of the ban on cannabis and hemp foodstuffs is a significant step forward for the South African cannabis industry.
As the industry continues to evolve and grow, we will likely see many new opportunities emerge for entrepreneurs, investors and consumers alike.
