South Africans are proving to be the ultimate playmakers, with a new study revealing that we're more likely to engage in playful activities that build confidence, drive experimentation and promote physical activity.

According to the Mattel study, "The Shape of Play", South Africans are 25% more likely than the global average to play to build confidence and gain knowledge, 20% more likely to incorporate competition and experimentation into play and 16% more likely to play with a goal of mastery or achievement.

The study found that play is fundamental to humanity and happiness, with 94% of people believing play is for all ages and 81% believing that play can improve global health and well-being.

In South Africa, play is not just about having fun; it's about building resilience, leadership and empathy. Whether it's through sports, games or creative activities, play is an essential part of daily life.

In addition, the study identifies four key motivators for play:

  1. Expression and experimentation

  2. Escapism and well-being

  3. Strengthening connections and collaboration

  4. Personal growth and learning

By understanding what drives play, we can create more opportunities for it in our daily lives – through meaningful experiences or even fleeting micro-moments.

Play is a powerful key to unlocking happiness and well-being.
