If you've fallen victim to Durban's notorious potholes, you may be eligible to claim damages from the eThekwini Municipality.
And the good news is that the process is relatively straightforward.
Pothole-related damage can be costly. For example, in 2023, TopAuto reported that the average cost of a pothole-related insurance claim at Santam, South Africa's largest insurer, ranged from R20,000 to R25,000. These claims usually cover significant repairs, such as tyre replacements or bent rim fixes.
If you're facing damage to your car and a hefty repair bill, follow these three easy steps to file a claim:
Step one: Complete two forms – the claim affidavit form and the public liability claim form.
Step two: Attach all necessary documentation. "The claimant needs to attach pictorial evidence of the area of the incident, the damages caused and an invoice where possible," says Gugu Sisilana, eThekwini Municipality spokesperson.
Step three: After filling out both forms and gathering all the required documents, submit your claim via email to the finance claims department at [email protected].
In addition to claiming damages, you can also report potholes to the city's engineering unit call centre on 080 311 1111 or via WhatsApp on 073 1483 477, reports Highway Mail.
You can also send an email to [email protected] or log a fault on the Ethekwini App.
