Mzansi Math: The viral way to save money while spending it
Updated | By Stacey & J Sbu
Quick maths...
Do you have a ridiculous way of justifying how you buy something? Turns out others do too...
May we present the viral phenomenon of Girl and Boy Maths.
According to multiple TikToks, the phrase is a way for women to come to terms with their spending habits and men to justify obscure or escalated behaviour.

Stacey and J Sbu have put their own spin on things and have adopted this concept to Mzansi maths.
Mzansi math is the way South Africans justify spending. For example, I can go to a shopping centre, go on a shopping spree and watch a movie cause I am saving money due to load shedding.- Stacey Norman
This hilarious and unique way of looking at things has allowed South Africans to do what we do best- shed light on unfortunate situations and circumstances.
Some of our very own East Coast Radio listeners have shared their Mzansi math moments:
- "I know you've heard of money stokvels where a group collects money monthly and each person has a month when the complete collections come their way. In my community we have a food stokvel for December we contribute all year, and in December we literally buy no groceries that lasts us for months, depending on how big your family is."
- "Power for us is free. We installed solar panels, a gas stove, gas geyser, and have a borehole we've been off the grid for years and loving it."
- "I bought glasses for R4000 but I wear them every single day so it's free if you divide it by the number of days."
- "Paying R1000 for my gym membership is an investment in my health so essentially I am not spending a cent."
- "I never pay for clothes. The designer clothes and bags I own and no longer wear I rent out and I've made the cost of the items back, I've used the profits to buy new items I wanted."
- "Anytime I buy something in cash, it is free"
