We are all about saving, especially when it comes to certain things, but never would you have thought that someone would try throw the cheapest wedding ever on one of the most memorable days of your life.
This mother has hands down taken the trophy for throwing the 'the cheapest wedding ever' for her daughter after she set a strict $1,000 (R15,000) budget. How hectic?
The lady that goes by the name of Shelly Watson, from Arizona, has appeared on a recent episode of TLC's 'Extreme Cheapskates' where she revealed she's been on a mission to save money for the past two decades. That sounds like a lot of planning.
She planned so well for her daughter's big day that she even changed her thrifty ways. Talk about motherly love. But the tricky part was that she had set a non-negotiable budget of $1,000 and refused to spend anything more above that set amount.
This clever lady even had top money-saving hacks which involved hiring the local school's gym to use as the venue, ordering out-of-season Christmas flowers, and baking her own cake. One focused mama!
On the show, Shelly said:
I think spending $400 (£285) on a wedding cake is ridiculous, that is wasted money. It costs $2 (£1.40) for a cake mix."- Shelly
She went as far as to borrow a stand from a local bakery to show off the cake, just to make things look a little bit fancy.
She said:
I think the display cake was the better option for their wedding because it didn't cost us anything, it was free.- Shelly
But of course not everyone was impressed with her cost-cutting ways, especially the husband to-be's mother, Denise.
She commented on the show, saying:
I thought it was a f***ing joke, nobody in their right mind is serious about having it in a gym. It's ridiculous.- Denise
To which the bride-to-be replied:
This is going to be the cheapest wedding ever.- Ashley
But the bride's mother didn't care much about what people had to say, instead she continued saving on things like the venue and décor. She also wanted to make sure Ashley got the absolute best price for a dress.
So, wait for it.. she took Ashley to a pawn shop where she had the choice of three dresses.
The bride to be luckily found one she liked but, unfortunately for her, it had some rat pee on it, but this didn't put Shelly off, because she used it to haggle on the price and got the dress for $75 (R1,125). Imagine! Rat urine included.
Shelly didn't stop there, ladies and gentlemen, because she went ahead and got herself ordained so she could legally perform the wedding and by doing that, she managed to save $300 (R4,500) in the process.
The biggest secret about this wedding that I have not told anybody yet is that I am an ordained minister and I am going to officiate this wedding.- Shelly
