The National Minimum Wage (NMW) in South Africa, along with minimum wages in specific sectors, has increased effective 1 March 2024.

The minimum wage, which was previously R25.42 per hour, has been raised to R27.58 per hour, this is an approximate 8.5% increase.

Farmworkers and domestic workers' minimum remains on par with the NMW at R27.58 per hour.

If you work 8 hours a day for five days a week (160 hours per month), your salary will increase to just over 4,400.

It's important to note that there are exceptions to the new minimum wage rates.

Workers employed on Expanded Public Works projects will receive a minimum of R15.16 per hour, while workers with a learnership agreement under the Skills Development Act will follow a specific schedule outlined in the Government Gazette, reports LabourWise.

To ensure compliance with the new minimum wage rates, employers are required to adjust their payment structures accordingly.

Failure to comply with these increases may result in penalties or possibly legal action.

Employers are advised to consult the official Government Gazette or seek advice from relevant authorities for further guidance on how to adjust payments in accordance with the new rates.
