This out of the blue challenge is encouraging people to steal cars!

After making a debut on TikTok, the Kia/Hyundai challenge is causing thefts and damage to cars all around the world.

Carscoops share that, The ‘Kia Challenge’ shows social media users how to steal certain Kia and Hyundai models by simply removing the plastic cowl under the steering column and using a USB cable.

Showcasing the vulnerabilities in these cars has led people to steer away from purchasing these particular vehicles, as well as led owners to worry about their safety.

Furthermore, this challenge has also encouraged a group of young teenagers known as the ‘Kia Boys’, who have become notorious for stealing cars and taking them on dangerous joyrides.

"These types of thefts can happen in less than a minute," says WFAA News.

Car owners have been alerted to the matter and have been encouraged to take measures to ensure the safety of the vehicle.

Here are some tips for ensuring the safety of your vehicle:

  • Park in a well-lit area
  • Do not leave valuables in plain view
  • Always lock your doors and wind up windows
  • Do not park near anything that can inhibit the view of your car 
  • Always be alert and expect the unexpected
  • Put a tracker and alarm in your car if you are able to
