Updated | By Stacey & J Sbu
Skip the hassle! South Africa's eHome Affairs lets you apply for your ID or passport online, here’s how.
Ditch the lines and say goodbye to piles of paperwork! It’s time to use the - eHome Affairs system, an online platform that puts you in control of your Smart ID and passport applications.
While eHome Affairs makes things easier, a quick visit is still required. This is to capture your fingerprints, signature, and snap a photo to ensure everything is legit.
Don't worry though; you have the flexibility to finalise your application at any Home Affairs office, appointment or not!
Here are the steps:

Step 1
Head over to the eHome Affairs website or click here to register a profile. It’s important to ensure all your details are correct and that you choose a password you will remember.
Click “Next” after filling in your details and completing the Captcha.
Step 2
You should receive a One-Time Pin (OTP) via SMS after step 1 to confirm your cellphone number. Copy it and click “Submit OTP”.
Step 3
Now it’s time to use your ID number and chosen password to log in.
Step 4
You will receive another OTP via SMS. Wait for it, add it to the block, then hit “Submit”.
Step 5
Now it’s time to complete the application form for either a Smart ID or passport. You can do this for yourself or a minor who is directly related to you. Ensure you double check all information to confirm that the numbers inserted and the spellings of the names added are all correct.
Step 6
After filling in all the relevant details and confirming that all the information you’ve added is correct, click “Submit”.
Step 7
If applicable, upload your supporting documents. The required documents will be listed. Remember that the same documents are required to be presented at the Home Affairs office or bank branch you choose.
Step 8
Making your payment online allows you to book a spot at a Home Affairs office or bank branch. Remember that the bank details you enter is the bank you will be allowed to use.
For example, if you add FNB bank details and reside in KZN, you will be able to visit the FNB in Cornubia.
Here’s a list of all bank branches that offer smart ID and passport applications in KZN.
Step 9
Now you can choose which Home Affairs office or bank branch to go to capture your biometrics. It is not necessary to make a booking if you are going to a Home Affairs office but it is a prerequisite for a Home Affairs enabled bank office.
Step 10
