Green thieves: Plant poaching on the rise in Durban North
Updated | By Stacey and J Sbu
Plant thieves are reportedly targeting valuable plant species, leaving residents frustrated.

In the lush suburbs of Durban North, a different kind of poaching is taking root.
Plant thieves are targeting well-manicured verges and flower beds, leaving residents frustrated and demoralised.

The stolen plants are no ordinary flora. Cycads, bulbine, strelitzias, agapanthus and aloes are just a few of the prized species being pilfered.
These plants are not just aesthetically pleasing but also highly valuable, making them a hot commodity on the black market.
Northglen News spoke with Jane Troughton of the Durban North Conservancy, who said thefts are becoming increasingly common.
"It’s not just the cost of the plants but the labour involved as well. In addition, every bare patch is an opportunity for weeds to get a toe hold," she said.
Why are these plants so desirable?
For one, cycads are protected and highly valuable. Agapanthus, vygies, and bulbine plants are also in high demand. Thieves are even targeting nature reserves, like Bridgevale Park, for their prized plants.
Plants like cycads require permits. According to The Cycad Specialists, these plants are protected by both national and provincial legislation.
What can be done to stop these green thieves?
Residents are urged to report any suspicious activity and to propagate their own plants instead of buying them.
With a little creativity and community spirit, Durban North can reclaim its beautiful gardens and green spaces.
