'Golden pockets' spark outrage in Mzansi among samoosa lovers

When is a samoosa not a samoosa? When it’s called a golden pocket.

Authentic Indian food can be a point of contention for many diehard foodies. Recently, a picture of a samoosa labeled 'golden pocket' has South Africa up in arms.

According to Britannica, a samoosa/samosa is a South Asian filled pastry that is fried or baked. They are generally filled with a savoury filling.

Check out this Facebook post that started the controversy and opened the floodgates for #SamoosaGate:

According to the post and media reports, someone has taken it upon themselves to rename samoosas. Shock, confusion, and disbelief were some of the emotions shared by online users when this started circulating the net.

These sensational samoosas are by no means your regular kind. From boerewors to peri-peri chicken and even plain old ham and cheese, these samoosas are here to make a statement.

Despite the expected delicious taste, the people were not happy about the rebranding.

“No no no it's sacrilege! And since when does a samoosa have ham and cheese in it? I guess that's why they changed the name.”

These aren't the first samoosas that have been filled with something unexpected. However, you can't say they didn't do the right thing by adjusting the name. "Almost anything tastes good in a samoosa," shares J Sbu.

So, what exactly constitutes a samoosa? Is it the filling, the frying or traditional aspect?
