#FeelGood: Meet the Umlazi initiative that brings fun-filled movie theatre experiences to young kids
Updated | By Stacey and JSbu
Film, like literature, is an excellent source for not only entertainment, but also learning.
Vicky Denise Chili is a young proudly KZN woman who is inspiring a community with the power of storytelling using a projector, an open space, and a few chairs.
She is the founder of eKasi Bioscope, which is a fun-filled theatre experience.
The idea to start such an initiative began whilst still a student for Vicky at King Shaka High School in Umlazi. So vivid is when the seed was planted for Vicky that she even recalls what day it was - the 16th of June.

Realising the impact of poverty and the lack of extra mural activities for the youth in her community, Vicky decided to come up with not only a fun entertainment escape for the kids in her neighbourhood, but something that could also be an additional educational tool.
Vicky selects a range of films, mostly locally produced, to showcase to her young audiences. "We value local movie content and want to make sure the younger generation is exposed to it," shares Vicky.
The initiative also allows Vicky to raise awareness to very serious societal issues such as abuse, bullying, and poverty.

Speaking more on this, Vicky shares: "The idea was to show films that highlight these issues and afterwards have an open dialogue with the young kids about their feelings and what they think about the content."
Most of the movie screenings happen within the community of Umlazi, but due to the pandemic, they have had to be put on a pause for safety concerns.
Stacey and J Sbu had the opportunity to catch up with this incredible young woman on Tuesday to share more about her passion project and what plans she has for it in the future.
