Durban restaurants: 6 eateries close doors in 2 months
Updated | By Stacey and J Sbu
Rising costs, economic pressures and high rentals are forcing iconic Durban eateries to close.

Umhlanga, once the playground of the elite, is facing a crisis in its restaurant industry. The past two months have seen over six restaurants close their doors, citing high rentals and rising operating costs as the main culprits.
This trend is not unique to Umhlanga. The broader Durban area is also feeling the pinch, reports IOL.
The restaurant industry is a significant contributor to the economy, generating over R6 billion and creating more than 16 million jobs.
However, the sector is struggling to stay afloat amid economic pressures, including load shedding and constrained spending power.
The challenges facing Durban's restaurant industry are compounded by the city's struggles to attract tourists. Beach closures, water restrictions, and high crime rates have all taken their toll, making it difficult for restaurants to stay afloat.
Despite the gloomy outlook, there are glimmers of hope. The halaal food sector is booming, with a proliferation of new outlets opening in Durban.
Additionally, organisations such as the Restaurant Association of South Africa are stepping in to support the industry.
The Durban Chamber of Commerce and Industry NPC is also committed to reviving the tourism industry, recognising its critical role in the local economy.
"We are committed to promoting tourism as a key economic driver for the province and eThekwini Municipality," says CEO Palesa Phili.
