Do you check your food for expiry dates?
Updated | By Stacey & J Sbu
There has long been varied views on the topic of expiry dates and we are intrigued to find out more...
We recently heard about the fatalities of two KZN kids that were allegedly caused by expired food.
And this got us thinking about expired foods. Who actually takes the time to check for expiration dates on their food items when they are out shopping and how important is it for shoppers?
In saying that, we also found a post from Reddit that read: "Food expired? Don't be so quick to toss it. The dates solely indicate freshness. That means the food does not expire in the sense of becoming inedible."
We have to admit that we have heard that before, but with the rise in food poisoning, it really doesn't leave us feeling confident about food that still has a long expiration date.
The concerning part of this line of thinking was the fact that many people rely on their taste to determine the freshness of certain foods.
For instance, one person commented saying: "I've had milk be perfectly fine days past expiry. As well as things like sour cream, etc. It's really easy to tell via taste and smell when milk has gone bad, yet I see people throwing it out purely because it's hit the date." (Reddit)
