One day it's hot, next day it's cold. From thunderstorms to cloudy with a chance of meatballs, KZN has seen it all lately.

Another bizarre weather phenomenon recently struck Durban.

Residents populated social media feeds with colourful lightning strikes and hot winds on Tuesday night.

So what exactly went down?

The city was catapulted into darkness following the explosion of the Klaarwater power station, claimed a statement by the eThekwini Municipality.

Along with this electricity outage, the weather was running amok and people were confused.

The SA Weather Service’s Julius Mahlangu explained what went on it in simple terms.

He told IOL: “What happened was that there was a cold front approaching and met with dry winds from the inland area. This resulted in what we call a ‘Berg Wind’.

“This is winds from the interior of the country, from the high-lying areas around the Drakensberg.”
