In an exclusive interview with sports lead Nick Tatham following her win, Christie Mackenzie shared her elation and relief after clinching her fourth Dusi title.

With a beaming smile, Mackenzie exclaimed, "Yeah, we've been really blessed as paddlers these past three days... Happy to get home in one piece."

Mackenzie's love affair with the Dusi began with her family.

"The best part of it for me is having all my family and friends come together. They're always here to support me, and it's great to have an excuse to kind of come together, eat meals together, prep for the race."

As for how she got into paddling, she credits her dad for introducing her to the sport on the Mzunkuli River.

"It runs in the family... I jumped in a boat with him, and it became a thing with school. I just haven't looked back."

When asked about her winning strategy, Mackenzie revealed that she didn't feel invincible throughout the three-day race.

"I was super tired today... I felt really strong on day one and day two, but I think I worked hard enough to give myself a little bit of a buffer. So, I was able to just kind of relax today and try to make as little mistakes as possible.

Speaking about the Dusi, Tatham said, "The Dusi is a wild ride. I’m up at 4 am and it’s a really long day, but always so exciting to see these incredible athletes doing amazing things.

"I’ve been covering the Dusi for over 10 years and I think that 2025’s race is one of the best from an organisational perspective. 2026 will be the 75th edition of the race and we’ll be back to cover the race from the heart of the Valley of a Thousand Hills!"
