Choosing a school: How you can use social media to make the best decision

Social media can be a great resource, but is it showing the whole picture?

Picking the right school for your child is a daunting task. You want a place that fosters learning, growth, and safety.

With so many options, where do you even begin? Traditionally, parents relied on school websites, rankings, and word-of-mouth recommendations. However, the rise of social media has added a new dimension to the research process.

Texas A&M University conducted a study that found that social media can reinforce existing biases.

Imagine you're considering two schools. If you already favour one, you're more likely to seek out positive information about it on social media, ignoring any potential drawbacks. This "echo chamber" effect can prevent you from getting a well-rounded picture.

The study also found that people who actively seek out information are more susceptible to social media's influence. For example, a parent unsure of a school's after-school programme might be swayed by positive online reviews from other parents.

So, how can parents use social media wisely?

Don't rely solely on social media. Use it as one piece of the puzzle, alongside school reports, standardised test scores, and, most importantly, school tours and meetings with administrators:

  • Be mindful of bias.
  • Look for a variety of perspectives, both positive and negative.
  • Seek factual information.
  • Don't get caught up in emotional rants or opinions presented as facts.
  • Do your own research.
  • Verify the information you find online through official school channels. Social media can be a helpful tool, but remember, a curated online image doesn't always reflect reality.
