Career hard lefts: Are you where you thought you would be?
Updated | By Stacey & J Sbu
Difficult choices that lead to different destinations...
Career choices is a very difficult topic of conversation. Many people sit in their 30s and 40s when they are meant to have an established career, according to societal standards, yet still do not know what they would like to do in life.
Not many people have the luxury of choices, whatever career they would like to. It is often a monetary decision based on what can be afforded as well as what jobs are available or in need at the particular instance.
Education is not cheap or accessible to everyone and acquiring a skill can take time. The decision is made by taking all of the above into consideration .

Often we find ourselves in a position where our dreams and goals are not being fulfilled, and likewise our values are not being honoured.

We decided to pose this question to our listeners and see what they had to say:
Our listeners came back with some stellar feedback and some #realtalk that many South Africans can relate to:
- "I qualified in journalism/advertising and marketing but couldn't find employment in the industry. Started out as a media/communications lecturer, then completed a PGCE and became an English teacher. Best move. Love my job."
- "Studied law, completed articles, started teaching, completed PGCE and I work in retail now."
- "34 years Finance, switched over to cosmetic chemistry and been in it 13 years now, still learning and loving it everyday."
- "Retail pharmacy for 15 years to health & safety training facilitator."
- "I studied to become a computer programmer. Changed careers to a credit controller which I did for 19 years."
- "Yes I worked for 10 years in retail and changed over to construction not knowing anything....10 years later and it was the best move I could have ever made."
As seen above, career changes are very normal. Where we think we will be is not always where we end up...
However, challenging this narrative is our Drive Team. Both Stacey and J Sbu wanted to go into radio and that's exactly what they did.
If you plan on taking a 'hard left' anytime soon, we wish you all the best on your journey.
