Bulk buying or less is more?

Is
it better or cheaper to shop for groceries once a month or every week?
Many South Africans braved the shopping malls this weekend to do their monthly grocery shopping. Added to that, it was also the weekend of Black Friday, with plenty of hopefuls on the search for incredible deals.

Stacey Norman was on the hunt for great savings this weekend as well, but not for goods that would be deemed essential items, instead the fashion lover was doing some online shopping for new clothes!
J Sbu, on the other hand, was playing driver for his mom and sister who were doing the Nxumalo family monthly grocery shop. The Nxumalos believe in bulk buying when it comes to groceries, that means following a list.
J Sbu shares that he and his family have been doing this for as long as he can remember.
His mom believes that bulk buying helps with the family expenses versus running out every week to purchase something. Her son, J Sbu, disagrees, though. For J Sbu, who is a bachelor, he does not believe in bulk buying - in fact he thinks bulk buying groceries is a waste of money.
So, how does he buy his groceries?
I buy groceries and toiletries for myself on demand. I will only go to the shops when I need something which is probably why my fridge is always empty! I go to the shops once a week.- J Sbu
Stacey and J Sbu decided to ask the question to their Facebook community and, surprisingly, the audience was divided on when they did they their grocery shopping and which tactic was more cost effective.

Facebook user Lee-Ann Meryl Mahabeer had this to share:
Once a month, you have a budget and a list and you stick to it. It saves you time and money cause you won't be buying unnecessary things every week when you visit the shops. U also don't have to join queues weekly- Lee- Ann Meryl
Facebook user, Priscilla Moodley had a different view, however:
Once a week so u can accommodate ur perishable goods to. Any way I go often to da shop cos I like fresh staff nd I don't like meat dats frozen for too long- Priscilla Moodley
