Marmite vs Bovril
Updated | By Nobuntu Swartbooi
The duo is a staple in a lot of South African homes, but which one is better?

Stacey and JSbu decided to have the ultimate kitchen
cupboard debate when they asked KZN listeners to share their favourite between Marmite and Bovril in Monday’s edition of The Big Debate.
Just two weeks ago there was great concern in South Africa after there was a report from the United Kingdom that they were experiencing a shortage of the salty, vegetarian sandwich spread.
The Marmite versus Bovril battle has been going on for years in South African homes alongside the smooth or crunchy peanut butter debate.
According to FOOD24.COM, the main ingredient difference between the two spreads is that Marmite is strictly vegetarian, whereas Bovril is based on beef stock. The other startling difference is the number of ingredients – Marmite lists only 5 ingredients, while Bovril has a whopping 19 ingredients. Both spreads have a similar consistency and are also not just limited to being spread on a slice of toast - but also do wonders in stews.
But which one is the best?
