The Durban University of Technology (DUT) is launching Africa's first solar-powered boat, the SiyaHamba.
The Durban University of Technology (DUT) is making waves with Africa's first solar-powered boat, the SiyaHamba.
This groundbreaking project is set to set sail from Durban and compete on the international stage at the Monaco Energy Boat Challenge (MEBC) on 6 July.
The SiyaHamba isn't just about racing; it's about pushing the boundaries of green technology. Built by DUT students and staff, the boat is designed to be a beacon of innovation, inspiring not only fellow students but the entire industry.
This unique project offers students an invaluable hands-on experience. They were given complete creative and engineering freedom to build a solar-powered vessel from scratch.
The SiyaHamba itself is a marvel of technology, boasting a lightweight carbon fibre composite hull and a powerful 1.3-kilowatt solar array that charges its battery bank.
DUT's collaboration with the Energy and Water Sector Education Training Authority (EWSETA) highlights the importance of this project. By participating in the MEBC, the SiyaHamba team aims to showcase Africa's potential in the renewable energy sector and inspire future generations of engineers, reports IOL.
The solar-powered vessel is housed at the DUT Energy Technology Station. With DUT being selected as one of only 15 finalists out of 100 entries, the excitement is palpable. Durban is about to witness a historic moment as Africa's first solar-powered boat sets sail for a future powered by clean energy.
