Thandolwethu: 'I was called midnight because of the colour of my skin'

'I grew up being a very insecure young black woman. I grew up in a predominately coloured area and I was called all sorts of names such as midnight because apparently, I was so black', says Thandolwethu.
Throughout my childhood, I was bullied for the way I look. One girl, in particular, would torture me every day. She even would paint black shoe polish on my face.
This got me thinking that I may not be the only person to have gone through this. I fully believe that words cut deeper than any wound. I believe that it is very important as people we respect one another and show empathy towards each other.
