After noticing some alarming messages in her daughter's Grade 1 government-issued reading book, this Durban mom shares her thoughts and concerns with Jane.

On Monday during my show, I spoke about a Grade 1 government-issued reading book that has been angering moms and getting mixed reactions on social media.

Ashmie Balmogim is a Durban mom who made contact with me regarding the messages that she saw in the reading book. She sat down and chatted to me about her thoughts on it.
When listening to her, it is clear that she is unhappy and mentions how these words unsettled both her and her daughter. If anything I think this conversation is good and it's been amazing to see the different views and opinions of many.

While some are saying it's just a book and society is over sensitive, others are distressed and think that this type of stereotypical gender portrayal and physical bias has no place in a six-year-old's reading material.
In this day and age, we should be inspiring our children with words of inclusion and not perpetuate this cycle of being different and rather focus on the things that unite us.
