The Fees Must Fall Protests: What does Rory predict?
Updated | By East Coast Drive
Rory paints a picture of what he thinks is to come. The picture is not very pretty.
Earlier today, Rory Petzer posted a Facebook status outlining what he predicts is to come for South Africa over at least the next year or two.
Let us know if you agree with him or not, or just generally, your thoughts on the issue.
This is what Rory posted to his personal Facebook:
This is what I predict:
Whatever the outcome of the #FeesMustFall protests / riots / campaign, universities are going to be forced to repeat this year.
This means, academically, 2016 won't count and all students will have to start again next year.
This means the millions of matrics who leave school this year will not be able to gain admission to university next year.
This means they will be very, very, very angry.
This means we will have millions of very, very, very angry teenagers floating around with nothing to do, becoming more and more frustrated.
This means that probably 40% of these angry teenagers will choose to protest / riot / campaign to get into a university because such is their right. Once they start, 20% more will join. Then people who never even had any intention of going to university will join too. You know, just because.
This means it will once again become violent and destructive.
This means the 2017 university students will probably be forced to stay at home too.
This also means that at least 25% of these angry, floating teenagers will indulge in drugs and violent crime to pass the time and / or to make ends meet.
This means the crime rate will rocket.
This means unemployment will rocket.
This means there will be increased tension.
This means every single sector of society will be affected (long term) and I'm not sure it will be a comfortable space to be in.
This means South Africa will possibly never fully recover from having lost one single academic year at university.
I'm not sure we (I) fully comprehend the gravity of what is currently happening around us.
It is a long-lasting socio-economic disaster, with consequences (in many ways) similar (and in some ways, worse) to (than) those of war.
We need a blesser.
Thanks.
Meanwhile, Rory angered many with a post to his personal Facebook page last week.
The post was a satirical take on the exorbitant price of petrol and not at all a dig at the students.
However, with it currently being such a sensitive issue, some didn't see the light side of it.
Here it is.
