FitU with Phindi Gule: Preventing loss of toenails while running
Updated | By Phindi Gule
Ever wondered what causes the loss of toenails while running? Well, wonder no more as Phindi Gule chats about it during this week's episode of FitU.
Common in runners is the loss of toenails and it's commonly referred to as runner's toe.
You will be pleased to know that this kind of occurrence is not uncommon amongst runners, particularly those that have a marathon or two under their belts.
Listen as Phindi shares her tips on preventing the loss of toenails while running in the podcast then read more below:
I could feel it, however, I ignored it. It had turned black a few weeks ago and I knew it was going to go eventually. This nail is the fourth one that I’ve lost in the four years since running my first marathon- Shirley Williams
There are three ways to prevent the loss of toenails when running:
Trim your toenails
Be sure to trim your toenails so the edge is straight across and just above the nail bed. Cutting your nails too short or with curved sides will increase the risk of infection or ingrown toenails. Perform regular toenail maintenance to keep them at the proper length and generally clean, to save yourself from 'runners toe'.

If the shoe fits?
Make sure your running shoes have enough room in the toe area. A shoe that is one-half to one size larger than your street shoes will provide room for the foot to expand when it strikes the ground during exercise. Have your foot measured and fitted at an athletic shoe store if you continue to have problems with toenail damage. These experts can ensure that your shoes are long enough and wide enough to protect your toenails.
Let your feet breathe
A way of preventing foot moisture is wearing shoes and socks that will allow your feet to breath and stay dry. Excess moisture will not only increase the risk you losing your toenails but will also increase the chance of blister formation.
