While it is important to replace running shoes, getting new shoes every very months can get expensive. The better you take care of your running shoes, the longer they'll last. In this week's edition of #FitU, Phindi shares some of her tips for making your running shoes last longer
The popular question when it comes to running and shoes is 'how can I make my running shoes last longer?' Well, I have the answers for all your questions.
Wear your running shoes only for exercise
Although they may be your most comfortable pair of shoes, don't wear your running shoes for anything other than running or working out.

Take your running shoes on and off in the correct manner
When you're in a rush, it's tempting to try to take your running shoes on and off without undoing the laces. Shoving your foot into the shoe often bends the heel collar, lacing system, and uppers. It also puts stress on the stitching and glue that holds everything together. Also, make sure you loosen the laces before you put your shoes on and take them off.
Make sure you dry your wet running shoes
If your shoes get wet, don't put them on direct heat like on a radiator. Heat dries out the leather, adhesives and other materials in the shoes.
To dry your running shoes properly, loosen the laces, take out the insoles, and let them air dry away from direct heat. To help them dry faster, you can put crumpled-up newspaper or a kitchen towel inside of them. The newspaper will draw out the moisture, allowing your shoes to dry much faster.

Alternate two pairs of running shoes
If you run almost every day, it's beneficial to rotate two pairs of running shoes. Your shoes will last longer when you give them a day or two to decompress and dry out between workouts.
A good tactic is to start a new pair after you've been wearing a current pair for about a month to six weeks. In this way, you will also notice the difference in cushioning and support between the two pairs, a signal that the oldest pair is ready to replace.
Store your shoes properly
Keep your running shoes in a cool, dry place where they can air out properly. Heat is the enemy. A gym bag may be a great place to transport your shoes after a run or gym workout, but it's also a humid environment without air flow. Take them out of the bag so they can air out.
Don't put your running shoes in the washing machine or clothes dryer. If you need to clean your shoes, use a scrub brush, mild soap, some cold water and then let them air dry.
