Esther Mahlangu receives honorary doctorate

Esther Mahlangu has received an honorary doctorate for her incredible service to the arts.

As an international icon and custodian of heritage, mama Esther Mahlangu has been graciously honoured with awards and medals by government countless times, and by more than one South African President.

Mahlangu began painting as a child and was taught the art of Ndebele homestead wall painting and beadwork by her mother and grandmother.
On Monday, mama Esther Mahlangu, 81, was hailed as a visionary, and an individual who "broke down barriers in her own way" during a graduation ceremony held at the University of Johannesburg (UJ).
