You might not think it's possible, but even on social media, there are traditionalists.

People who prefer one social media platform over another could be considered traditional. Interestingly, a global study by Mailsuite (an email marketing tool) analysed over 1,500 reviews from Google Play to identify how people rank social media apps worldwide.

Seeing the most and least-liked social media platforms in each country was insightful, but seeing the most loved ones in South Africa was what really peaked our interest.

"In South Africa, Facebook was named the most-loved social media platform. This doesn’t necessarily align with the rest of the world, where Facebook was named the most hated social media platform in 39 countries, including the UK, Australia, Canada and India." (Business Tech)

We know that Facebook is a favourite in South Africa, and we've seen that in real-time from the engagement with our East Coast Radio Facebook Family

The most disliked platform in South Africa is Reddit

"Globally, TikTok was the most loved social media app, with 30 countries, including the UK, Canada, New Zealand, and Australia, naming it their favourite. Launched in September 2017, TikTok quickly became one of the most influential social media apps in recent years, with over 1 billion downloads on Playstore and over 80 million reviews (Playstore and Appstore combined)." (Business Tech)

Even though TikTok has experienced significant growth in South Africa, Facebook remains the country's most popular site. TikTok's popularity could be attributed to the "engaging short-form video content".

Instagram and X declined in stature and dropped down the popularity podium from 2022 to 2023. The decline in X (previously Twitter) could be attributed to the change in user preferences and new features after Elon Musk took over the platform.

LinkedIn came in fifth on the popularity list, followed by Telegram (10%), Pinterest (10%), 2GO (10%), Tinder (6%), and Grindr (5%).
