In the last five years, Chelsea have won the league title twice, but on each occasion the season after claiming the prestigious prize they finished outside of the top four and the coveted UEFA Champions League places.
Both triumphant coaches, Jose Mourinho and Antonio Conte, complained about the mentality of the payers - and they are on point.
You can't have a team of world beaters performing like amateurs overnight. The team is often branded 'Player Power FC' because those players perform when they want to, and when the coach demands productivity from them, they look to sabotage him.
The players are the common denominator and for a change, the head honchos must stick with the coach, as the team has endured four coaching changes in the last six years. That does nothing for continuity.
How do you explain their current season? From handing Manchester City their first defeat of the season in December to losing 6-0 against the very same team barely two months later. It is all very strange.
What about their form in the last four games? From winning 3-0 to losing 4-0 to winning 5-0 and then losing 6-0. It shows that these players can rise to the occasion if they want to... but that desire is few and far between.
