Westville Senior Primary School is organising a Bone Marrow Donor Drive on Wednesday, 22 June, from 07:30 until 09:00. This is for their student, Syamthanda Nxasana, who was diagnosed with Leukaemia in 2021. The Bone Marrow Donor Drive is in partnership with South African Bone Marrow Registry (SABMR).

At the drive, anyone between the ages of 16 and 45 may come through to be tested, to see if they are a bone marrow match for Siya or anyone else battling Leukaemia.

The 10-year-old has been in and out of the treatment room for so long now and, unfortunately, the cancer has come back more aggressively. Most of her schooling in 2022 has been through the use of online classes as she has been in the hospital for several months.

Siya, as she is known by her close friends, has missed her family and friends terribly. It has been a very testing time for Siya and her family on emotional, psychological, spiritual, and financial levels.

The school is hoping there will be a big turn out on Wednesday for the Bone Marrow Drive.

Siya and her parents are very much stretched financially. This is because due to the expensive treatments this year alone, Siya’s medical aid funds have been exhausted and so much more is needed to help contribute to Siya’s urgent medical costs.

Grade 5 teacher and one of the organisers for this project, Peta Mumford, urges the public to consider giving funds to help save this child's life.

"As a school, we felt compelled to help our learner and the family through this difficult time by offering a way to raise money for these increasing bills," said Peta.

There has been a back-a-buddy project which the school has opened and continues to monitor. The fundraising target is R600,000.
