The most important thing to note when making popcorn is to not do this:

You simply have to:
- Heat the oil
- Put 3 or 4 popcorn kernels into the oil to check the heat
- Add the rest of the popcorn:
- Cover the pot until they start taking longer than 5 seconds to pop
- Remove from heat
