WATCH: Durban woman fights off alleged phone thief
Updated | By East Coast Radio
This woman was not going to give up that easily. Not without putting up a fight!
When it comes to the natural human fight-or-flight response, many of us would like to think that we would be brave enough to fight if we were presented with a situation where it was necessary.

But let's be honest, our true instinct would be to get away as quickly as possible.
That was probably what this alleged phone thief was expecting when he decided to ambush two women who were enjoying some pool time with their children at the Barcelona flats near North Beach.

In the CCTV footage that has been making the rounds, two women can be seen sitting at a table when the man jumps over the fence, moves towards them, and makes an attempt at stealing, presumably, their phones.
However, they were not just going to let him get away with it.

One of the women almost immediately starts fighting back and manages to land quite a few impressive hits as the thief realises he has made a mistake while trying to run away.
It also seems that during the altercation, the thief had dropped some important documentation such as his identification documents and what appears to be court documents.

Raz Ali, the founder of Boss-Uip Security Specialists, spoke to IOL and said that it is not yet confirmed whether the documents in question do belong to the alleged thief, but from what they can tell, the person to who the documents do belong is out on parole for similar charges.
While the women did an incredible job of fighting off the thief, who did end up getting away with the phone, Raz does want to warn others that reacting in this way could lead to a very different ending if the person was armed with a knife or any other type of weapon.
It is a proud moment for women but I wouldn't advise anyone to react in that way. It just goes to show the frustration levels in our society that we are constantly in a state of readiness to fight back if you look at how this woman reacted. Under normal circumstances, one would go cover their children and protect them but this shows how frustrated we are with crime.- Raz Ali
Luckily, no-one suffered any major physical harm and a case has now been opened with the Durban Central Police Station.
