Video: Man shares Shoprite food prices in Angola
Updated | By East Coast Radio
Remember that one Angolan Kwanza is equivalent to R0.021 in South Africa.
A video was shared on Instagram that would raise any South African's eyebrows if posted without context.
A man walked around a Shoprite branch in Angola. He wanted to compare the cost of a few items in the Angolan currency (Kwanza) to the South African Rand.
Many people have been finding it difficult to make ends meet, and the cost of groceries fluctuating all the time doesn't make things any easier.
With basic staples such as onions and tomatoes fluctuating rapidly, it can be frustrating for many families trying to budget efficiently.
The man in the video shocked us when he showed us the price of the onions, which was 1,999,99kz a kilogram, which is R40 a kilo. Then he shared other items like Sunshine D margarine and Jameson whiskey.
One kwanza equals less than five cents.
It was pretty entertaining to see how people responded to the video:
- "I'm moving to Angola. I'm a millionaire in other countries."
- "I think the prices would just irritate me...... Imagine getting a slip valued at 90k at Shoprite"
- "I can by all the shoprites with my 100 rand"
- "I’m Angolan, yeah if you’re getting paid outside of the country things are incredibly cheap here, in large quantities no less. but if you’re lower class it’s a struggle but at least you can still afford veggies."
