It’s time to add these to your vocabulary...
Do you have rizz? What era are you in? Do you gatekeep?
With the rise of social media, slang acts as a dynamic mirror reflecting the current cultural zeitgeist. In 2023, a wave of unique and strange slang words have emerged. While it may be difficult for many to decipher what they mean, others are “bussin”.
Recently, Oxford has announced that the word they will be adding to the dictionary this year is “rizz”.

This word triumphed over strong contenders such as situationship, prompt, de-influencing, and even Swiftie.
To make sure that you “fit the vibe-check”, we have selected five other words from 2023 that you need to start using:
- NPC - Someone, regardless of their views, who doesn't think for themselves. Also known as a Non-Playing Character.
- Mid - Used to insult or degrade something or an opposing opinion, labelling it as average or poor quality.
- It’s giving- You can throw this one into conversation to describe the vibe something is giving you. You can also use “it’s giving” as a standalone compliment.
- Era - This word, made popular by Taylor Swift’s fans, has taken over social media. Think of this as a substitute for “phase”. Are you super into baking? “I’m in my baking era.”
- Gatekeep - In the world of life hacks, many urge people to share everything, however, some people refuse to. Those who do not wish to share information call it gatekeeping.
Once you add these words to your vocabulary, all of the cool kids on the block will be saying “it’s giving educated” every time you use one.
