Disaster struck after a landslide hit the coast of Italy and led to an unimaginable catastrophe.
A cemetery, although seemingly scary at night, is a calm place.

It's not as if there's any craziness happening there, as it is supposed to be a place where people can rest in peace and visitors can spend quiet time with lost loved ones.
It's not often that you hear of any wild happenings taking place in a cemetery... until now.

The Camogli cemetery, which is over 100 years old and has stood the test of time, has been almost completely destroyed.
The cemetery is located near Genoa and is situated on top of a rocky seaside cliff, which unfortunately made it so much easier for this tragic incident to take place.

A landslide hit the Italian coast, which led to the cemetery giving way. Luckily, no-one was hurt but around 200 coffins ended up in the ocean!
According to Giacomo Giampedrone, the regional assessor of civil protection, the most tragic part of this accident is that they have only been able to recover 10 coffins.

He has also stated that any further recovery attempts will depend on the sea and the tide over the coming days.
The town had been doing maintenance on the coastline, which is known to be quite fragile, but no one could have expected this.
The mayor of the town spoke to CNN about what could have led to the crash that took place on the 24th of February.
We were doing work on a portion of the rocky coast -- it was close to the area that fell today. Some signs of fissures were seen. We decided to close the cemetery.- Francesco Olivari, the mayor of Camogli

They also called on Ligurian Office of Civil Protection officials to help intervene and are asking them to evaluate the situation, while a group of geologists are using drones to access the damage.
They are also hoping to determine whether or not another landslide might be on its way, as it could have even more disastrous effects.

They have also blocked off the part of the ocean that has been affected in order to prevent the coffins and corpses from drifting away.
For their part, as well as the friends and family of the deceased, we hope the rest of their recovery operations are successful.
