In South Africa, 13-million people experience(d) hunger in 2021.

Up there with Mark Zuckerberg and Jeff Bezos, South African-born businessman Elon Musk did the most brazen thing on social media a few days ago.

He responded to comments by David Beasley, director of the UN's World Food Programme, after he called out for the likes of the aforementioned to donate a portion of their wealth to 'end world hunger'.

"Step up now, on a one-time basis," he challenged.

Elon Musk then threw the ball back at Beasley and challenged a United Nations (UN) official's claim that just a small percentage of his wealth could help solve world hunger.

"If the World Food Programme, using transparent and open accounting, can describe on this Twitter thread exactly how $6B will solve world hunger, I will sell Tesla stock right now and do it," he wrote in a Twitter post.

If you are curious how much $6-billion is for the CEO of Tesla, it is a small fraction of his current net worth of $311-billion. If we convert that to our currency, it would simply be illegible - too many zeros.

His company recently joined the handful of companies valued at more than $1-trillion, so, yes, he could contribute the money but will it be sufficient?

Most of us are all curious to see how this will unfold, especially if he is not trolling and just teasing.

The UN is given the chance to be transparent and show how dependable and effective they are as an organisation.

People want to know if there are plans to these programmes and how money is truly allocated.

This interaction might not necessarily do much for world hunger completely or at all, but would give the world a genuine reflection of what the UN stands for and if they really do the work.
